On the heels of returning from KBIS 2018 I can tell you we are amid some very exciting developments for our organization.  The NKBA has begun an epic transformation of our ability to expand our reach to emerging professionals, students and consumers in a variety of very significant ways.  They have looked at everything from the core structure of our national organization and local chapters all the way down to generating real benefits of the NKBA to our individual members and students (and everything in between).

They have created a new website as the most noticeable and predominate change taking place. The website will be in BETA mode for the foreseeable future because they are continually making updates and tweaks that are super exciting. Please take advantage of every option they are making available to your individual profiles to promote your business.  This is significant in that the focus is, in general, on our association specific to the kitchen and bath industry but you can promote your own business, market segment, or corporate information.  This what your membership dues pay for and it can be a lucrative lead generation tool as you build your profile.  It is tied to Google search engines and social media platforms that will beat a path to your business if you use this phenomenal tool.

Another important focus is the turn toward outreach to students and emerging professionals.  The student may be at the high school level, college level, continuing education second career level, to get them interested in becoming a kitchen and bath professional.  The need is huge and if we don’t get an organized move-on we will not have a large enough pool of people to fill the gap between those retiring and those coming into our industry workforce. Now, some of the interesting things the NKBA is doing for students is creating a dynamic student design competition and allowing the students to begin building their profiles and portfolios on the website.  This is free to the students who are involved in kitchen and bath design. Can you imagine how great an opportunity this is for students as they begin their careers and how much will already be built for them through this tool?

Our local NKBA California Capital Chapter is also undergoing a stretch and outreach to students, emerging professionals, local associations such as NARI, ASID and consumers.  I am very proud to be starting and serving this year as your chapter president. We have some very exciting events that will be happening throughout this year. My goal in this role is to make our local NKBA community as vibrant and inclusive as we can be. I really want to hear from you about what you want from your chapter. Come sit in on our Council meetings to see what we do. We are in a state of change and I challenge each member to reach out to others at meetings and business commitments to promote what we do as partners and members in the NKBA. Gain more knowledge about how our chapter works by getting involved. I’d like to encourage everyone to try new things that we are presented with from the national organization. I understand it can be frustrating at first but I think we are on the precipice of something fantastic and dynamic. We can learn together. As Peter Drucker said, Knowledge has to be improved, challenged, and increased constantly, or it vanishes.”
Our support of each other and our respective organizations is at the core of who we are as a very successful chapter. Let’s keep that at the forefront of every interaction we have with each other.

In addition to our monthly chapter meetings and presentations, our Design Competition and the partnered NARI/NKBA Golf Tournament, the most notable event will be our Sacramento Regional Design and Build Event. The NKBA California Capital Chapter is proud to present, the Annual Sacramento Regional Design & Build Event, on May 11, 2018.  This event will be held at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation Hall in Sacramento, California.  The event will have a ‘Farm-to-Fork’ themed dinner presented by Hawks Restaurant and Hawks Provisions and Public House, as well as live art entertainment with David Garibaldi, live auction with David Sobon Auctions and music by Top Shelf Classics. Funds are being raised to protect our NKBA members’ right to practice, provide educational scholarships, and continuing educational credits for our membership.  Money will also be raised once again this year for Habitat for Humanity who is a phenomenal partner and very worthy organization in need of our support.  Both are 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations.

I am thankful for our new Executive Council, our Auxiliary Council and Committees for all their effort and support as we discover together how talented, enthusiastic and dedicated a chapter we can be in 2018. Everything is possible because of you and our membership. As always, we need more to volunteers to achieve our goals and we will have many opportunities in the coming months to rely on that giving spirit.

My very best regards,

Genise Hood-Plessas
